Philosophy of Listening
LISTENING TO THE LAND
Our vineyard was shaped long before any of us arrived. Four million years ago, a landslide formed the plateau on which Dalla Valle Vineyards sits — a western-facing expanse unlike any other in the valley. Because of that ancient geology, the land doesn't receive the sun uniformly. It meets it at angles, in pockets, across eighteen distinct blocks, each carrying its own aspect, its own personality, its own voice.
This is not terroir as abstraction. It is terroir as character — accumulated over millennia, expressed anew in every vintage. To walk the blocks is to understand that we are not the authors of this place. We are its stewards.
LISTENING TO THE INNER VISION & BELIEF
From the very beginning, Naoko and Gustav championed Cabernet Franc when few others in the Napa Valley were paying attention to it. That foresight — that willingness to listen to what this land wanted to grow — became one of the defining signatures of Dalla Valle Vineyards. Today it runs through our blends as a thread of intention woven through every wine we make.
“There is a sense of calm and peace in the vineyard, and yet you can feel the energy of the soils, the life within them. The vines hold a kind of contentment. My work begins with that feeling.” -Maya Dalla Valle
LISTENING TO THE LEGACY & CONTINUITY
Since Gustav’s passing in the mid-nineties, Naoko has remained a living presence in this work — her wisdom, her standards, her love for this place woven into everything we do. The vineyard holds the memory of them both, of seasons and decisions and two lives given in devotion to one singular place. Honoring their legacy is about continuing a conversation they began, with the same piece of earth, through the same patient work.
“My father passed many years ago, but I feel him most clearly when I am here, on this land where I was raised.” -Maya Dalla Valle
